Brahma Kumaris is a worldwide spiritual movement dedicated to personal transformation and world renewal. Founded in India in 1937, it has spread to over 120 countries on all continents and has had an extensive impact in many sectors as an international NGO.
As part of its mission Brahma Kumaris seeks to share experiences and developed technologies with individuals, NGO’s and communities. As a spiritual organisation its main aim is to help people to experience greater well-being through inner peace and universal values. Its environmental initiative is based on five main principles: Living with simplicity; Buying compassionately; Using economically; Sharing generously; and Learning continuously.
Brahma Kumaris Environment Initiative is about awakening greater environmental awareness within their organisation, as well as collaborating and learning from others through dialogue, partnerships, UN conferences and local initiatives. Brahma Kumaris includes environmental sustainability in their spiritual programs in centers, retreat centers and headquarters.
Shine Campaign Commitment
Brahma Kumaris is committing to scale energy access and environmental sustainability through development of new technology, technical assistance, education, expansion and exposure to other Ashrams.
In 2017 Brahma Kumaris and the World Renewable Spiritual Trust (WRST) completed the design, development and installation of “India One”, a 1 MW solar thermal power plant in Abu Road, Rajasthan. The 35-acre project uses 770 60 m² parabolic solar dishes developed in-house and features innovative thermal storage for night operation and steam generation. India One generates heat and power for a campus of 25,000 people.
Currently 300 centers in India and 6 main retreat centers run on solar energy. Brahma Kumaris is committing to scale renewable energy to ultimately reach its 5,000 meditation centers in India and 800 more abroad. Brahma Kumaris
