Final Day – Wrapping Up Financing the Future Summit
As the Financing the Future Summit wrapped up, participants offered a range of powerful commitments that will advance Shine’s mission and vision. Religious leaders committed to advocating within their own structures for increased funding and investing in energy access. African foundations committed to a convening of funders, NGOs and faith communities on the continent to explore ways to accelerate the deployment of distributed renewable energy solutions. An overwhelming majority of participants called for a similar summit to take place in the coming year in a different region of the world, helping to seed the movement on a global scale. Mobilizing Capital for Small-Scale Clean Energy Projects and Energy Access
After two full days of important discussions at the Financing the Future Summit, Shine co-sponsored (along with GreenFaith, Southern African Faith Communities Environmental Institute (SAFCEI), the International Climate Initiative, and the Low Emissions Development Strategies Global Partnership) and participated in an interactive workshop for faith-based organizations, religious leaders and government leaders. This workshop provided a unique opportunity to explore practical and actionable models and pathways for collaboration among faith-based organizations, non-profits, the private sector, and government entities who are interested in energy access and distributed renewable energy financing landscape.
More and more religious organizations are working to advance clean energy access for the 850 million people globally who still live without electricity. This workshop provided a special focus on mobilizing finance and grant-based solutions – like direct investment through debt and equity, investment through intermediary and blended capital funds and programs, and market development activities through grants. Participants engaged in conversations about the challenges and opportunities to drive aggressive action to end energy poverty across the African continent.
