Programmes
Our programmes spark bold, locally-led action for energy access. From leadership fellowships to funding accelerators, each initiative is designed to advance gender-just, community-rooted solutions in the clean energy space.
CURRENT PROGRAMMES
Power to the People: South–South Solidarity Webinar Series
Each quarter, SHINE hosts dynamic, multilingual webinars that bring together voices from civil society, women-led enterprises, frontline communities, and progressive investors. This series fosters South–South solidarity by connecting activists across Latin America, Asia, and Africa, while building cross-sector alliances to scale local innovations into continental policy influence.
Feminist Transitions in South Africa’s Mining-Affected Communities
In deep solidarity with Earthlife Africa, SHINE is working in South African communities impacted by mine closures. These areas face degraded land, economic collapse, and energy insecurity. We focus on building collective power and feminist alternatives including the groundwork for decentralized, community-controlled renewable energy in places like Soweto that centers the care economy.
Ecofeminist Energy & Climate Justice in Malawi
In Malawi’s Lilongwe area, SHINE partners with women-led community groups to advance energy and climate justice rooted in care, dignity, and self-determination. Through feminist participatory research and popular education, women are documenting experiences of energy poverty and climate disruption while co-creating renewable energy solutions tailored to their communities.
Young Women’s Critical Minerals & Energy Democracy Movement
SHINE is convening a vibrant network of young women (ages 18–30) across Zimbabwe’s lithium corridors, with plans to expand to Zambia and the DRC. This movement challenges patriarchal, technocratic energy governance and promotes people-centered decision-making through community assemblies. It is cultivating a new generation of ecofeminist organizers influencing policy and reshaping global supply chains.
Women-Led Power Enterprises in Bikita’s Lithium Landscape
In Bikita, Zimbabwe, home to one of the world’s oldest lithium deposits—SHINE is supporting rural women’s cooperatives to pilot solar-powered agro-processing hubs. These include peanut butter mills, refrigeration units, and other food technologies that build climate-resilient local economies. The initiative demonstrates how feminist, circular energy solutions can power livelihoods while protecting land, water, and ancestral knowledge.
Participatory Feminist Research & Knowledge Co-Creation
In partnership with the Institute of Development Studies (IDS), SHINE is co-designing research circles with women activists and communities across Africa. Using feminist methodologies such as story-harvesting, creative mapping, and community dialogues we document lived experiences of energy poverty and extractivism during energy transitions. These insights are being translated into accessible, community-driven learning tools.
